Child injured in drive-by shooting in southeast Houston, police say

HOUSTON – A child was hospitalized after being injured in a drive-by shooting Sunday night in southeast Houston, police said. 

The shooting was reported around 7:10 p.m. in the 4900 block of Southwind Street. 

Houston police said a disabled mother was rolling down the street in a motorized wheelchair with her 9-year-old son on her back. Police said a vehicle drove by and opened fire at a group of men standing in a vacant lot nearby.

Police said the child suffered a gunshot wound to the leg during the drive-by. The group of men who were shot at came to the woman and child's aid but fled the scene once police showed up, authorities said. 

The child was taken to Memorial Hermann hospital in unknown condition. 

Police are investigating the scene.
