TEXAS CITY, Texas – A massive fire engulfed a church Friday in Texas City.
The fire was reported about 10:15 a.m. at the Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Carver Avenue near South Bell Drive.
According to Texas City police, there have been no reports of injuries as a result of the fire.
Streets are blocked in the area, police said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The church stood for 134 years. To many people in the community, the fire destroyed a place where many memories were made. The historic building served as the place where memorable life moments happened.
"I was baptized over here. My family (had their funeral services) out of here. I was baptized at the age of 7 years old here," Chester Smith, a former parishioner, said. "Just years of memories, people who built this little church and built this thing."
