2 arrested after officer-involved shooting, chase, crash in southwest Houston

HOUSTON – Two people were arrested Sunday after an officer-involved shooting that was followed by a chase and crash in southwest Houston.

The incident began about 4:15 a.m. at an apartment complex on South Gessner Road near Clarewood Drive.

According to Houston police, two officers pulled over a vehicle that was believed to be connected to several robberies. Police said that when the driver stopped in the parking lot of Belara Apartments, two passengers jumped out and fled on foot. One of the officers chased down one of the passengers, identified as 25-year-old Derrick Turner, and arrested him.

Police said that as the foot chase was happening, the second officer was trying to arrest the driver, identified as 30-year-old Joshua Coleman. Coleman put the car in reverse and started to drive toward the officers, police said. The officer noticed Coleman reaching for a gun in the car and opened fire, police said. Coleman was not hit, police said.

Joshua Coleman (left) and Derrick Turner (right) are seen in mug shots released by the Houston Police Department on July 22, 2019.

Police said the Coleman drove away, and the second officer gave chase. After about two minutes, the driver crashed into another vehicle on the Southwest Freeway at Weslayan Street and officers were able to arrest Coleman, police said.

Coleman threw a gun out of the window during the chase, police said.

Coleman was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and felony evading arrest.

Turner was charged with evading arrest.

The second passenger who fled on foot remains at large. Police did not provide any information about that person.
