Body of swimmer who went missing in Surfside Beach found, Coast Guard says
FREEPORT, Texas – The search for a 17-year-old who went missing Sunday while swimming in Surfside Beach near Freeport came to an end Tuesday after the Coast Guard said his body was found.
The teen was reported missing around 8 p.m. Sunday after not making it back to shore while swimming with his friends, officials said.
According to Surfside police, the swimmer was pulled out about 150 yards by the strong current.
"I hope that people will be aware and take caution when they go out and realize it's dangerous. Listen to the lifeguards and listen to the warnings," authorities said.
Though Surfside remains open, many beaches in Brazoria County are closed due to the strong rip currents along beaches facing the Gulf.
Swimming is not recommended and Surfside Beach is not open to cars. Those who do choose to swim are being asked to use caution and stay away from jetties, rocks and piers.
On Monday, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter searched offshore and a fixed-wing aircraft conducted an aerial search for the teen, authorities said.
This was the third swimmer to go missing over the weekend.
