Driver shot inside Yellow Cab in Montrose, police say

HOUSTON – A driver was fatally shot while inside a Yellow Cab in Montrose Monday, according to Houston police.

The shooting was reported at 1:10 p.m. outside a Kroger's parking lot in the 3000 block of Montrose Boulevard.

Kroger employees told KPRC2 that the cab driver was a regular there and would often find customers needing a ride.

"He used to hang in this area cause he knows that he could get customers," Kevin Parker said.

HPD Cmdr. James Bryant said the driver was approached by a gunman who fired several rounds into the vehicle.

Wang Johnson owns a restaurant across the street from the incident. Johnson said he heard the gunshots and ran toward the taxi cab.

"We all went. There was a couple of people went there to see what's happened. We could see he was lying there by the taxi, blood right over here," Johnson said.

Police said the driver was struck at least once by the gunfire. Police said the gunman fled in a black sedan. The driver was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital where he later died on Tuesday, according to police.

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

"We have a couple of people of interest detained as well," Bryant said.

Parker said the cab driver is a good man and doesn't know why someone would want to shoot him.

"He gave me and my girlfriend at the time rides to our sleep spot when I was homeless around here. And he would just give me advice on how to get out of this situation," Parker said.
