Driver, convinced by family member, returns to deadly Heights crash scene, police say

2 pedestrians killed; cause of the crash remains a mystery

HOUSTON – The case of a driver accused of hitting and killing a man and a woman in the Heights area Saturday night, and then driving off will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

The crash was reported at 9:34 p.m. in the 800 block of Shepherd Drive at West 10th Street.

Jesus Perez, 64, and Lesha Adams, 55, were hit in the crash and died at Ben Taub General Hospital.

Police say the female driver fled to her grandfather’s house. The relative convinced the driver to go back to the scene, and she did return, authorities say.

The driver of a blue Chevrolet Cruze was headed northbound on Shepherd when the vehicle hit the two people, according to police.

The driver was questioned and released. Police said she did not show any signs of intoxication.

The cause of the crash remains unknown.

“At this point, we determined failure to stop and render aid,” Houston Police Sgt. John Benavidez said. “We don't know if there are any charges in the works right now.”

There is no crosswalk where the crash happened. Police aren’t sure if the two victims were crossing the street or walking in the lanes.

Initial Houston police reports said three people were struck, but information has been updated to indicate two people were hit.
