UPDATE: Man accused of shooting girlfriend found, taken into custody

HOUSTON – A man who police said shot his girlfriend after an argument on Christmas Day was found and arrested Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, the incident happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday at their north Houston home near East Rittenhouse Street and Werner Street.

Police believe an argument broke out and Hector Chavez, 38, shot Juana Saenz, 32, one time in the hip before fleeing the scene.

The couple's 7-year-old son witnessed the shooting but was not injured.

Saenz was taken to Ben Taub Hospital where she is being treated and is expected to survive, officers said.

Chavez was found and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Anyone who has additional information is being asked to contact the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Editor's Note: The story has been updated to reflect that previously authorities said Saenz was Chavez's wife, but later corrected it to say she was his girlfriend.
