HOUSTON – A woman is accused of leaving her infant daughter alone in a motel for nearly four hours before returning to the room on Monday in north Harris County, deputies said.
Charmaine Delquis Edmond, 25, was arrested and charged with abandoning her child.
Harris County deputies responded to a call around 2:30 p.m. from the Best Classic at 1316 Rankin Circle Drive after the motel manager found the baby girl in a room alone, officials said.
Edmond checked into the room Sunday evening, but it is unclear for how long the infant was alone before being found by the manager, deputies said. The baby was taken to Texas Children's Hospital in the Woodlands for an examination, deputies said. The child did not suffer any significant injuries and was placed into the custody of Child Protective Services, deputies said.
The mother returned to the hotel around 6 p.m. and asked the hotel's management about her daughter's whereabouts, deputies said.
Child abuse investigators arrived at the hotel, where Edmond was detained and questioned, deputies said. Investigators said Edmond's statement during the interview was confusing and inconsistent.
She is currently being held on a $1,000 bond in Harris County Jail.
