Hundreds of HISD students given free winter coats

A national nonprofit organization gave 320 winter coats to students at a Houston Independent School District elementary school in East Houston.

“I feel very grateful. Very grateful. Why? because this is the first time that I get a jacket from the school,” said student Kesren Ramos.

A coat will go a long way for each and every student at HISD’s Henderson Elementary School.

“Almost 100 percent of our population, they usually walk home and walk to school, and our parents they’re economically disadvantaged so this is a great opportunity to have warm coats,” said Principal Alana Holloway.

Operation Warm and FedEx are gifting all 320 students with brand-new jackets.

“Us being able to do this allows them to be able to come to school every day because a lot of the schools are walking and if they don’t have a coat, they might not get into school and able to learn,” said Sarah Bertoni with Operation Warm.

Now, these children will be extra warm and extra happy this winter season.

“The jacket feels so warm and stuff and it’s easy for me not be cold and stuff,” said student Javon Crosby.

Operation Warm will also give out jackets at 70 other schools across the country.
