Officer injured after family violence call turns into chase

GALVESTON, Texas – An officer with the Galveston Police Department was injured after a call concerning a threat of family violence turned into a police chase.

Police say they got a call around 11 p.m. Monday about a man who had made threats to his significant other involving a firearm and left the home minutes before officers arrived.

Officers cleared the scene and as they were leaving the area, police saw a man who matched the description given by his significant other and attempted a traffic stop, police said. 

The suspect fled the scene, leading police on a chase from Galveston on I-45 all the way to La Marque, police said. 

According to authorities, the man then abruptly stopped his vehicle.

When police stopped behind him, the man put his car in reverse and rammed into the patrol unit behind him, injuring one officer, police said.

The officer was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released, police said.

According to authorities, the man was taken into custody and charged with assault causing bodily injury and family violence as well as aggravated assault on a peace officer.
