HOUSTON – A 12-year-old boy stole an SUV on Tuesday from a northwest Houston gas station and took it on a joyride with two friends, according to police.

The theft happened about 11:30 p.m. near Wirt Road and Kempwood Drive.

Houston police said the boy jumped in the running SUV at the gas station and drove away. Police said the boy picked up a friend in his 20s, drove around the neighborhood and picked up a third person.

An officer later spotted the vehicle and when he tried to stop it, the vehicle pulled into a gas station and the three people inside fled.

The 12-year-old and his friend in his 20s were arrested. The third person got away.

The SUV was returned to the owner.
