Sleeping homeless woman hit, killed by chase suspect, officials say

HOUSTON – A homeless woman sleeping under a bridge was struck by a vehicle and died Sunday, officials said. 

Officials with Harris County Precinct 1 said a deputy was headed to a patrol area when a car sped past him at a high rate of speed and attempted to pull the driver over.

When the driver refused to stop, a chase began and the driver struck a utility box at the underpass at Interstate 45 and Rankin Road. The driver was taken into custody and officials found a pistol and marijuana in the car, officials said.

The woman, who has not been identified, was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
