Man accidentally shoots self in hand during southwest Houston standoff, police say

HOUSTON – A man who prompted a standoff Friday at a southwest Houston home accidentally shot himself in the hand, police said.

The standoff was reported about 10:40 a.m. in the 5700 block of Ariel Street, near South Gessner Road.

Houston police said they determined the man was armed and suicidal while conducting a welfare check. They said the man eventually calmed down and came outside.

Police said that at some point during the standoff the man accidentally shot himself in the hand.

The man was taken to Memorial Herman Southwest Hospital for treatment.
