Suspicious package at Austin FedEx facility contained 'explosive device'

AUSTIN, Texas – A suspicious package discovered at a FedEx facility in the Austin area is connected to multiple deadly bombings in Austin, authorities said.

The FBI said the suspicious package at the shipping center near Austin's airport "contained (an) explosive device."

A hazardous materials team was sent to the facility on McKinney Falls Road on the city’s southeast side about 6:20 a.m., according to Austin police Officer Destiny Winston.

Winston said she could not provide any specific details about the suspicious package, but said that local, state and federal agencies were at the scene.

The investigation came hours after a package exploded at a FedEx facility near San Antonio, injuring one person.

Authorities later said the incident was related to the San Antonio explosion.

Investigators are still trying to determine who is responsible for four other package explosions in the Austin area in recent weeks.
