Woman strikes sleeping man with vehicle outside of boarded-up car wash, police say

HOUSTON – A woman was arrested after she killed a man by running over him while he was sleeping in a tent outside of a boarded-up car wash, Houston police said.

The hit-and-run happened around 1:30 a.m. Monday at a gas station located at 7001 Gulf Freeway, police said.

Officials said they were initially dispatched to a report of a minor car crash at the location. from which and the driver had fled on foot. She was later located and identified as 40-year-old Maria Guadalupe Bravo-Nieto.

Authorities later returned to the scene after they had been notified that a deceased person was found outside the location. As they learned more details, police believe Bravo-Nieto pulled forward all the way through the outside car wash lane and struck the boarded-up entrance to the car wash building on the other side of the parking lot.  Investigators believe the victim was sleeping in a tent in front of the car wash building and was run over by the driver in the process. She then backed up through the "lengthy" car wash lane where she struck the pole at the entrance and then fled the scene on foot, Houston police said.

Autopsy results found the injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle, police said.

Bravo-Nieto has been charged with failure to stop and render aid and failure to stop and give information.

The victim's identity has not yet been released
