HOUSTON – To celebrate Black History Month, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Comcast honored 10 community volunteers on Friday.
The inaugural Mayor's History Makers Awards recognized the commitment of honorees to making a difference in the community through volunteerism, mentorship, advocacy and civic engagement.

This year's honorees are:
- Barbara Curtis
- Marilyn Douglas-Jones
- Carol Freeman
- Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr.
- Dr. Bobbie Henderson
- Pamela Joubert Davis
- Elexa Orrange
- Michael Pearson
- Christina Porter
Along with the award, each honoree will be featured in a 30-second public service announcement that will air on Comcast. The company will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of the honoree's choice.
The event was held at The Houstonian Hotel on North Post Oak Lane.
