Woman killed crossing highway while using cellphone, deputies say

HOUSTON – A woman was hit by a vehicle and killed Wednesday as she was crossing a major highway while using her cellphone, according to deputies.

The crash was reported about 10 p.m. near the intersection of State Highway 249 and Antoine Drive.

According to Harris County deputies, Melanie Mason had just gotten off the bus and crossed the highway outside a crosswalk. Deputies said witnesses reported that Mason was on her cellphone when she walked into oncoming traffic.

Mason died at the scene, deputies said.

The crash is under investigation.
