H-E-B donates $150,000 to help Sutherland Springs church shooting victims

Money to be distributed in coordination with church

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio-based grocer H-E-B is coming to the aid of those affected by the tragic church shooting in Sutherland Springs.

The company will donate $150,000 and has launched a statewide check donation campaign that allows customers to donate at any check out station.

The money will be distributed to the victims, in coordination with the church, the company said.

“H-E-B is committed to providing assistance during times of crisis. Our hearts reach out to all at this tragic, painful time,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B group vice president of public affairs, diversity and environmental affairs. “It is our hope that H-E-B’s donations, along with our loyal customers’ support, will help our neighbors in Sutherland Springs. This is a difficult situation for many as they grieve and face unimaginable loss.”

Additionally, the company said, the stores in Floresville and La Vernia are providing food and supplies to community support centers and local schools.

The shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, left 26 people -- ranging in age from 18 months to 77 years old -- dead and 20 wounded, authorities said.    

Devin Patrick Kelley, of New Braunfels, has been identified as the gunman.

Kelley walked into the First Baptist Church and began shooting around 11:20 a.m., before fleeing in a vehicle, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said. Witnesses said Kelley was dressed in all black tactical gear and a ballistic vest. A Department of Public Safety official said he was carrying a Ruger ARb assault-type rifle.
