Homeowner shot trying to stop car break-in in east Houston

HOUSTON – A homeowner was shot outside his east Houston home Wednesday after he tried to stop a car burglar.

Police said the homeowner heard something around 1:30 a.m. in the driveway of his home on Owens near Fidelity. When he looked outside, he saw a man sitting in the driver's seat of his car rummaging through his things, police said. The homeowner told police that he ran outside and tried to shut the driver's side door and keep the thief there until officers arrived. Police said the burglar pulled out a gun and shot the homeowner in the foot.

The man got away. Police said they are not sure if he took anything.

Paramedics took the homeowner to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition.

Police warn that if you see someone committing a crime, don't try to stop them call 911 instead.
