Good Samaritan helps police catch man who escapes patrol car after wild chase

HOUSTON – Thanks to a good Samaritan, Houston police say a man who led them on a wild chase is behind bars.

According to police, around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, a Hedwig Village officer tried to stop a driver along the Katy Freeway feeder road for a traffic violation, but instead the man kept driving.

The driver led police to Chimney Rock down, San Felipe, Yorktown, then up and down Westheimer, up to Sage, and finally to W. Alabama going in the wrong direction.

The chase ended on Westheimer and West Alabama after the driver crashed into another car, police said.

Officers placed the driver in handcuffs and put him in the back seat of a patrol car. Police said the driver got his hands to the front of his body, opened the car door and ran.

Video shows him trying to get away. But bystanders ran after him, and one of them tripped the escapee and officers took him into custody again.
