Suspect sought in shooting at child's birthday party that killed 1, injured 1

HOUSTON – Police named a suspect Tuesday in the northeast Houston shooting at a child’s birthday party that killed a man and injured another.

The shooting was reported about 6:40 p.m. Sunday at a home near the intersection of Majestic and Rand streets.

According to Houston police, about 30 people, including several children, were at the party when someone fired three shots after an argument between Daryal Garrett, 51, and his nephew. Garrett’s son was injured in the shooting.

Garrett died at the scene, and his son was taken to Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Investigators said witnesses provided a description of the gunman, which was used to identify Marcus Rodgers, 18, as a suspect in the case.

Rodgers is wanted on a murder charge.

Anyone with information on Rodgers’ whereabouts or the shooting was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story reported that two people were injured.
