American Airlines insists passenger's flatulence wasn't cause of emergency

RALEIGH, N.C. – American Airlines is refuting reports a flight evacuation was spurred by someone who passed gas.

The airline says a foul odor was caused by a mechanical error.

WNCN reported three American Airlines crew members complained of eye irritation and headaches from an odor described as flatulence, airport officials said.

In a statement, Raleigh-Durham International Airport confirms passengers were not evacuated from the plane.

American Airlines says people affected by the smell received medical help after passengers exited the plane.
