Klein community rallies around teen fighting cancer

KLEIN, Texas – A local teenager who had leukemia was back in the hospital Friday with complications.

"It’s been extremely difficult helplessly watching my son fight for his life,” said Yvette Munoz.

Her son, Jacob Munoz, 15, is stronger than most.

“After just having some headaches, we brought him in. We found out that he was basically in the end stages of an aggressive form of leukemia," she said.

Jacob fought for a year and a half and was in the intensive care unit 11 times.

Thousands of people supported him. He had 30,000 followers on Facebook.

“Having the community rally behind him, and along with his faith, he’s doing fairly well,” said his mother.

In January, doctors said he was free of cancer. He went back to his school in the Klein Independent School District, where he’s a member of the football team.

But, less than six months later, complications have returned.

"Right now, we’re dealing with some muscle breakdown, which has his liver and kidney functions kind of off, so he has to be monitored closely,” said Yvette Munoz.

Doctors also found pre-leukemia cells.

Still, the Munoz family was staying positive, knowing they’ll fight together and win together.

“He’ll tell me, ‘It’s OK, Mom. I have faith. It’s going to be good. It’s going to (be) good,'” Yvette Munoz
said.

Jacob will stay in the hospital for the next few days and doctors will perform a biopsy in a couple of weeks.
