Man faces 6 charges of intoxication assault after head-on crash

HOUSTON – A 26-year-old man is facing charges after authorities said he caused a head-on crash late Sunday night that injured multiple people.

Police said Elmer Jose Sandoval was driving a silver Lexus ES 300 south on Galveston Road near Witt Road around 11:55 p.m. when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a red Ford Expedition.

Three passengers in Sandoval's vehicle -- a 6-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy -- were taken to an area hospital, according to authorities. There was another female passenger in the Lexus, authorities said.

Three people who were in the Expedition were taken to the hospital: the 34-year-old male driver, a 12-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy. The boys' mother was not injured in the crash, police said.

The conditions of those taken to hospitals are not known.

After the impact, the five people in Sandoval's vehicle -- Sandoval, the woman and the three children -- got into a white Cadillac and left the scene, according to police.

Sandoval and the passengers were found at an area hospital while officers were conducting a follow-up investigation, police said.

Sandoval showed signs of impairment and was arrested and charged with six counts of intoxication assault, according to police.

The investigation is continuing.
