Stage Stores workers locked out of building

HOUSTON – The Stage Stores Inc. corporate offices in Houston were closed Tuesday morning, and company leaders said it was because of a dispute with the building landlord.

The company also owns Palais Royal and Bealls.

On Tuesday morning, the doors of its headquarters on the West Loop near the Galleria were locked with security cable. Employees were sitting in the lobby along with Houston Police officers.

After the offices reopened at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, it was still empty inside. An employee told KPRC Channel 2 News  some people left to work from home.

One of the vice presidents of Stage Stores Inc. said this is a result of an "ongoing legal battle."

"It’s an ongoing dispute with our landlord. There’s nothing we can say," said Quinn Dorgan, vice president of  Assistant General Counsel of Stage Stores.

The legal battle was not impacting stores or store employees.

This comes at a tough time for the company. With revenue declining in the last few years, Stage Stores Inc. announced back in March it'll close roughly 1 in 10 of its stores; 30 of them this year.

KPRC Channel 2 News had been in contact with the building management company, Jetall, and it didn't yet have a comment.
