Haverstock Hills Apartments shooting suspect appears in court

HOUSTON – The man accused in the Haverstock Hills Apartments shooting that left two people dead and six others wounded is now sitting in Harris County Jail after being captured and extradited from Jacksonville, Florida, authorities said.

Kenneth E. Jones was arrested at a Florida residence May 10.

Jones, 35, left the Harris County area after being charged with capital murder in the March 26 shooting at the apartment complex.

An argument between two groups culminated when Kenneth Jones and his brother, Harvey Jones, arrived at the complex, authorities said.

Kenneth pulled a rifle from the vehicle he was in and began firing it at the crowd of people, authorities said.
Jones will be extradited to Harris County in the next few weeks.

The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force gave a tip to Jacksonville law enforcement based on information that led to the arrest.

The shooting, which police said stemmed from an earlier argument over a woman complaining about some of the men sitting on the stairs leading to her apartment, killed Gary Rushner, 31, and Christopher Beatty, 33. Two other men and two women were injured.

The third Jones brother, Jeremy, was originally also charged in the shooting; however, investigators dropped those charges , calling it a case of mistaken identity.

Jones appeared in probable cause court Wednesday evening and said he would be hiring his own attorney.
