Gas leak prompts evacuations in Alvin

ALVIN, Texas – A gas leak shut down part of a highway and prompted an evacuation Wednesday in Alvin.

The leak was reported about 3 p.m. near State Highway 6 and McCormick Street after a construction crew hit a gas line, which caused the leak, officials said.

The state Transportation Department said the highway was closed between McCormick and East 1/2 streets.

Alvin police said that people were evacuated from one business in the area.

Police said the leak may take up to 5 hours to repair.

Officials said no injuries have been reported.
