Man shoots nephew in chest, police say

TEXAS CITY, Texas – A Texas City man has been charged with shooting his nephew, police said.

The Texas City Police Department said officers were called to the 1000 block of 25th Avenue early Sunday after Martin Torrez, 49, was shot in his upper chest area.

A witness who was riding his bike in the area said he heard a gunshot and saw Torrez on the ground. The man, who police said had paramedic training, rushed to Torrez's help.

Police said John Rodriguez, 55, Torrez's uncle, was at the scene when they arrived. He was arrested and taken to the Texas City jail.

Rodriguez is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
He bail was set at $105,000.
