Click2Daily: A look inside Kurios by Cirque du Soleil
HOUSTON – Cirque du Soleil is back in the Houston area.
Kurios, a traveling production three years into its run, is set to premiere April 6 at the Sam Houston Race Park.
"Usually, the original concepts are discussed, and the work begins on them, two to three years before they premiere," said Rachel Lancaster, the artistic director of Kurios.
"The storyline (of Kurios) is about a scientist who is trying to discover a portal to a different world," Lancaster said.
Channel 2 got a behind-the-scenes look at a rehearsal on Tuesday and got the chance to meet with one of the performers, Vitali Tomanov.
"(I started performing) when I was really young, when I was like 10, 11," Tomanov said. "(I've been doing this) for almost 20 years."
Tomanov and his scene partner, Marat Dashempilov, are recurring characters throughout the show. Channel 2 witnessed their rehearsal of the moment they begin to forge their own path in the storyline.
"You see those two artists all the way through the show. They are one of the first images you see at the beginning and they're almost like a puppet that comes to life," Lancaster said.
"When you see them at the beginning of the show, they're conjoined twins," Lancaster said, "and you see them all the way through the first half. They're always joined. They're always together. So the whole act is about the fact that they separate."
Just to prepare for the rehearsal Tuesday, Tomanov and his partner have a lot of work to do.
"My act is only seven minutes but to do all that, it takes the whole day," Tomanov said, "You know, like, working out, stretching, work out again, come back here. So basically, it's an all-day thing."
Kurios runs from April 6 through May 21.
"Kurios is very different from the shows you've seen recently in the Houston or Texas area," Lancaster said. "Don't think that just because you've seen a Cirque du Soleil show, that you've seen this one."
