Former Texas Children's researcher turning 104

HOUSTON – Several packages of candles will be needed for Dr. Charles Hurwitz’s birthday cake on Thursday.

The former researcher is turning 104 on April 1 -- no joke. He’s celebrating early on Thursday at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, surrounded by his friends and family.

Just to give an idea of how long ago Hurwitz was born in Springfield, Massachusetts: He entered the world a year before World War I began and Charlie Chaplin debuted his character "The Tramp.”

Hurwitz seems to take his age in stride. At the Jewish Community Center where he exercises three times a week, he entertains members and staff with stories from "way back when, when he was 85…"

Hurwitz, who moved to Houston in 1998, worked well into his 80s. His last publication was in 1995 at the age of 82.

Hurwitz has four children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
