Click2Daily: Behind-the-scenes look at Houston Area Women's Center

HOUSTON – The Houston Area Women’s Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary of supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

“We just started with a few rotary phone lines and from there it grew to our hotline, shelter, advocacy and counseling. These are life-changing services,” said Chau Nguyen, chief marketing officer and head of community affairs.

The center fields more than 40,000 calls a year, offers seven programs for survivors and has a shelter with 120 beds.

“To access our services is to really call our hotline. What we know about survivors is they aren’t always ready to leave but they need to know they are not alone. Help is available,” Nguyen said.

The problem of domestic violence and sexual abuse does not discriminate.

It can affect anyone and spans all socio-economic levels.

“Two out of three Texans know someone or they themselves have experienced abuse. It’s time to talk about it. It’s time to say, 'It’s not your fault.' The message we have to send is: 'It’s not OK to be hurt,'” Nguyen said.

If you’re a victim of domestic violence or sexual abuse, you can call the hotline at 713-528-2121. If you are a victim of sexual assault, you can call the hotline at 713-528-7273.
