Suspect in Victoria mosque fire arrested on separate charge

VICTORIA, Texas – A man believed to be involved in a fire that damaged a mosque in Victoria nearly two months ago was arrested on an unrelated charge last week.

The fire was reported Jan. 28 at the Islamic Center of Victoria.

According to prosecutors, Marq Vincent Perez was arrested March 3 and charged with possession of a destructive device. That charge stemmed from a Jan. 15 incident in which Perez is accused of trying to use a bundle of fireworks to set a car on fire.

Prosecutors said they believe Perez broke into the mosque on both Jan. 22 and Jan. 28. They said Perez is believed to have set the mosque on fire during the second burglary.

A judge ordered Perez held in jail, prosecutors said.

A mugshot of Perez was not immediately released.
