HOUSTON – Officials cut the ribbon Tuesday on the largest traveling observation wheel in the Western Hemisphere, which is debuting at the Houston Rodeo.
The massive La Grande XL weighs about 616,000 pounds. It features 36 cabins that can hold up to eight people each, about 500,000 LED lights and a 10-foot convex LED screen at the center.
More than 20 tractor-trailers were used to bring the pieces of the wheel to Houston. An 80-ton crane and a crew of 10 people were required to assemble it.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo opened Tuesday and runs until March 26.
