HOUSTON – The Houston’s First Baptist Church has announced that they’re expanding by buying an entire block in downtown Houston, the church confirmed.

The Downtown Project has purchased the 1700 block of Jefferson Street, a 2.1-acre lot and a 40,000-square-foot building to expand their growing community, church officials said.

The church officials said they will begin their first service on April 2 after renovations.

Pastor Gregg Matte released the following statement on the church’s website:

“I’m excited about the Downtown Project -- a new opportunity in the heart of our city. All that we do, as a people, and as a church, is to extend the Gospel message. I believe this uniquely located property will be a new beacon for that purpose in downtown -- where our church began 176 years ago.”
