Local parents heading to Austin to support fair education

Backing bill that would provide funds to high-risk schools

HOUSTON – Local parents are heading to Austin next week to show their support for a bill that would provide needed funds to high-risk schools.

Friday, the group "Parents For Full And Fair Funding" gathered at Hunters Creek Elementary in Spring Branch ISD. They said their main concern is low teacher salaries.

"If we can't increase our teacher salaries, we're [...] losing teachers to other districts," said Denise Campbell, a member. "Our teacher salaries are some of the lowest in the Houston area. Also we have 57 percent poverty in our district even though we're considered a property-wealthy district."

The rallies in Austin are expected to last all day Monday at the state capitol.
