Rice baseball team heading to Cuba

12-day trip will include games & classes

The Rice University baseball team is going to Cuba for a 12-day trip.

HOUSTON – This week, the Rice University baseball team will embark on a journey that was months in the making.

Los Buhos (The Owls) will spend 12 days in Cuba. During the trip, the players will compete in five games against Cuban Baseball Federation teams, attend classes and explore Cuba's culture.

The team will have classroom sessions with talks from guest speakers and discussions on Cuban music, art and architecture. There will also be a class with the Cuban Baseball Federation.

"Our baseball team's trip to Cuba is a terrific complement to the players' Rice education," said Rice Athletics Director Joe Karlgaard. "Student-athlete time demands are such that study-abroad opportunities are rare. I'm grateful to the Rice faculty and administration who worked out the logistics to make this trip a reality."

The Owls will wear a special patch with the U.S. and Cuban flags on their hats, along with "Los Buhos" jersey tops.

The team will depart Houston for Cuba on Wednesday.
