HOUSTON – The mother who was wounded during a robbery and shooting that killed her 4-year-old daughter and wounded her 10-year-old daughter is “very distraught,” according to her family.
Harris County investigators said Diana Gomez, 27, was unloading groceries Monday night outside her Greens Crossing Boulevard apartment, when three men got out of a car and tried to steal her purse. They said that when Gomez wouldn’t give up her purse, one of the men started shooting. Gomez and her daughters, 4-year-old Ava Castillo and 10-year-old Betsida Castillo, were hit.
Ava died at the hospital.
On Wednesday, Gomez’s sister, Julie, said that the mother was shot seven times, and doctors removed part of her intestines. She said Diana Gomez is conscious but cannot speak after doctor’s recently removed her breathing tubes. She said Diana Gomez learned Tuesday that Ava died.
“She just cried,” Julie Gomez said.
Betsida and Diana Gomez’s 3-year-old son are with their father, Julie Gomez said. She said Diana Gomez’s newborn is with her fiance’s family.
Investigators said that a person of interest in connection with the shooting was taken into custody Tuesday morning at a north Houston motel during the execution of a warrant on an unrelated charge of assault family violence. They said that a semi-automatic gun was found in the man’s room.
The man has not yet been charged in connection with the crime, investigators said, but detectives are conducting tests and interviewing him.
Investigators said they are still looking for the men responsible for the crime. They said the group was last seen wearing dark-colored clothes and driving a dark-colored sedan.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from the apartment complex and are also talking to witnesses, investigators said.
Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
