Man arrested in death of woman in Fifth Ward

HOUSTON – A 58- year- old  man has been charged with murder in the death of a woman early Sunday morning in the Fifth Ward, police said.

Bobby Bell, 58, is charged with murdering Viola Pickney, 33, around 4 a.m. near Quitman and Staples.

Officers found Pickney lying in a vacant field, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

"The area is not as bad as a lot people say that it is," local pastor Arthur Wiley said. "We want the Fifth Ward to remain prideful and steadfast because there is a brighter day ahead."

Bell, also known as Bobby Clarence Wooten, was taken into custody late Sunday evening. He was charged Friday morning in court.
