Woman accused of forging check, buying $38K in gold coins, retiring to Belize

Theft was on her last day before retirement

HOUSTON – A Houston woman is accused of pulling off an elaborate theft on her last day at work before retirement.

Karen Fazio Kutach, 56, was the office manager at Coastal Metal Recycling. She is accused of stealing a company check last month and forging the owner's name on it.

Kutach allegedly used the check to purchase $38,000 worth of Canadian gold coins. According to court documents, she then went to Belize to begin her retirement.

The business owner learned about the theft when Kutach texted his wife. According to court documents, Kutach's text said she did something wrong and was sorry.

The owner then checked his bank account and saw the check that was issued to Houston Precious Metals for $38,000.

Kutach is charged with felony theft. She has not been arrested.
