Houston teacher accused of flying to Chicago to have sex with teen boy

Drew Watson communicated with boy on social media, prosecutors say

HOUSTON – A Houston teacher was arrested Thursday after prosecutors said he traveled to Chicago to have sex with a 15-year-old boy.

Federal prosecutors said 30-year-old Drew Watson met the boy in April on social media, and he sent the boy sexually explicit messages and pictures.

Prosecutors said those communications indicate that Watson knew the boy was under the age of 18.

According to prosecutors, Watson flew to Chicago on May 13 after arranging to meet the boy. The boy’s mother dropped her son off at a friend’s house, thinking he was going to spend the weekend there. The mother felt something was wrong and circled back around to the home. That was when she saw her son get into a car driven by Watson. She confronted him and called authorities.

Watson was charged with coercion and enticement, transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

In a statement, Chanelle Figueroa, a spokeswoman for YES Prep Public Schools, confirmed that Watson has worked at the East End campus since July, and was fired Friday morning.

The statement read, in part:

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority at YES Prep Public Schools. As such, every employee at YES Prep must pass the state required background check before beginning their employment ... In the best interest of the East End campus and the entire YES Prep community, his employment with YES Prep has been terminated effective immediately. We will continue to cooperate with the authorities to support the investigation.

If convicted, Watson could face between 20 years and life in prison.
