Train derails near east Houston ship channel
Small area of track damaged, officials say
HOUSTON – Three cars of an Union Pacific train derailed Monday morning in east Houston.
The derailment was reported along JW Peavy Drive, just south of the ship channel in Buffalo Bayou.
According to Union Pacific spokesman Jeff DeGraffe, two of the three cars that derailed were carrying plastic pellets, a white material that could be seen leaking from one of the cars. He said the material is not toxic.
DeGraffe said the remaining car was empty.
A small section of the track was damaged in the derailment, DeGraffe said.
It was not immediately clear when the tracks would be repaired.
No injuries were reported.
