2 dead in separate drownings minutes apart in Lake Conroe

CONROE, Texas – A man and woman drowned in Lake Conroe Sunday, deputy constables said.

“He was just out there having a good time and went under and didn't come back up,” said Capt. Rusty Fincher, with Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable's Office.

Investigators said Benjamin Davila, 50, from Houston, was swimming with family members at Lake

Conroe Park along Highway 105 at about 4 p.m. Sunday. When they didn't see him, they called for help.

“We were here within minutes and they got ready and went under and dove for him and they found him and he was deceased,” Fincher said.

About 15 minutes later, on the north side of Lake Conroe, deputy constables said two couples went for a boat ride. They stopped and the two women jumped in the water.

“One of the ladies went under. Her husband immediately dove in and grabbed her, got her up above the water. They got her over to the shoreline,” Fincher said.

That 68-year-old woman, known to be a good swimmer, died at a hospital.

Investigators used their deaths as a reminder for everyone this summer.

“(Wear) Life jackets, swim with a buddy, don't take any unnecessary chances. There's just so many things. Just use common sense,” he said.

Deputy constables said the medical examiner will perform autopsies on both victims.
