Authorities find man in yard, convince him to give up weapon

Dwayne Day is accused of threatening to kill his family with a samurai sword.

BIG COPPITT KEY, Fla. – A man from Big Coppitt Key was arrested Thursday after threatening to kill his family with a samurai sword, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Deputies were called at 12:30 p.m. to a home on Jade Drive by a man who said his son, Dwayne Day II, 24, had a knife and was making threats to kill his entire family.

Herrin said deputies found Day in the yard with a sheathed samurai sword in his hand.

Herrin said deputies were able to convince Day to give up the sword and surrender peacefully.

Day was arrested on a charge of improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon.
