Houston Ship Channel reopens after tanker spill

HOUSTON – The Houston Ship Channel reopened Thursday afternoon after a tanker spill.

About 500 gallons of benzene spilled from the tanker Maritime Jingan around noon while it was moored at Vopak Terminal.

A small portion of the benzene entered the water, but the leak has been secured.

The channel was closed for about two hours between the Lynchburg Ferry Crossing and Carpenters Bayou.

The cause is under investigation.
