BAYLOR, Texas – Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett was offered the position of the football team's interim head coach Thursday, several media outlets reported. He is expected to accept Friday, according to ESPN.

This comes after Baylor University announced Thursday that head coach Art Briles would be "suspended with intent to terminate," following sexual assault allegations involving the football team.

Baylor University issued a statement  Thursday about the leadership changes:

"Board of Regents apologizes to Baylor Nation; Dr. David Garland named interim University President; Ken Starr transitions to role of Chancellor and remains professor at Baylor University Law School; Head Football Coach Art Briles suspended with intent to terminate; Athletic Director Ian McCaw sanctioned and placed on probation."

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Baylor University fired president Kenneth Starr.

ESPN obtained Waco police records that showed a list of allegations of violent incidents involving Baylor football players who were not charged, appeared to face little or not discipline even though the team's staff knew about the allegations and that some documents were shielded from public view by officers.
