Friends, family remember teen killed by suspected drunken driver on prom night

HOUSTON – The rain fell and so did their tears as family and friends remembered Jocelynn Valero.

On a dark day, it was her bright smile that united dozens on the North Freeway and Tidwell. Many brought balloons, teddy bears and flowers.

It's the place the 18-year-old died.

"She was so confident in her smile, her actions and she was really kind." Bethany Alcaraz, Jocelynn's friend, said.

Police said Edin Rodas was running from officers early Saturday when he hit Jocelynn's car, killing her. Her boyfriend was seriously injured. They were driving home from prom.

During a time meant for celebration, classmates from YES Prep Academy came with heavy hearts.

Bethany Alcaraz was her best friend.

"She was so happy. She looked so beautiful in her dress. We danced with her. She was just so amazing." Alcaraz said.

Police said at the time of the crash Rodas showed signs of intoxication.

"If you drink and want to have a good time, do not get behind the wheel of a car," Annalisa Valero, Jocelynn's sister-in-law, said.

Jocelynn's family members are making an emotional plea before another young life is gone.

"In an instant, you can break an entire family, you can break friendships and then all we're left with is memories and it's not fair," Valero said.

Rodas was due in court Monday but did not appear, according to court records.
