NBC News – A Florida man is on the run after crashing his car into a gas pump, then fleeing the scene and leaving his injured children behind.
Sarasota County deputies say they began their pursuit of Maurice Betard, Jr. Sunday afternoon after witnessing a traffic violation.
Before the crash, Betard, Jr. allegedly told his passenger, "Please forgive me, man. I'm not going to jail tonight."
That's when, the passenger said, Betard, Jr. accelerated and started weaving in and out of traffic. The car then crashed into the gas pump.
Surveillance video shows the passenger and Betard, Jr. exiting the car. Betard, Jr. takes one of his children, hands him to the passenger, and then makes a run for it.
