Texas A&M football coach Kevin Sumlin releases statement on WR coach's social media mishap

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Last week Texas A&M football took a big hit.

Not only did one of their top quarterback recruits decide to switch schools, but a social media post by the team's wide receiver coach also caused other recruits to shy away from playing in College Station.

In wake of the incident, Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin issued this statement on Monday:

“Last week, one of our assistant coaches, Aaron Moorehead, abused the privilege of social media and the result reflected poorly on Aaron, on our football program and on Texas A&M. He has apologized publicly and privately for his actions and I am confident that he understands the expectations moving forward. However, there are consequences for actions and Aaron has been disciplined and the details will remain private. We will use this as a learning tool for all of our coaches, staff and student-athletes, and we are now moving forward as a program.”

Five-star QB recruit Tate Martell from Las Vegas announced on Twitter on May 4 that he was re-opening his recruitment and de-committing from Texas A&M.

His tweet apparently prompted Moorehead to send out a series of tweets questioning loyalty. He tweeted, "People act like the truth is all the sudden a bad thing. Society is too sensitive. Y'all boys soft."

His series of tweets led to other recruits to respond. WR recruit Mannie Netherly tweeted that in light of the tweets from a "future coach", he was de-committing from Texas A&M also. Netherly later tweeted that he was "blessed to receive an offer from Ole Miss."

Also 5-star receiver Tyjon Lindsey re-tweeted Martell's tweet and said, "News I've been waiting for, Let's continue our duo."

On May 5, Moorehead sent out a tweet apologizing for his "impromptu comments on social media" and that he needed to better."

He apologized to Coach Sumlin and the Aggie family.
