2 Americans dead in Turkey attack

ANKARA, Turkey – The White House says two Americans were among those killed in a suicide attack in Istanbul. A National Security Council spokesman calls it a "heinous attack" and says the U.S. remains steadfast in support of Turkey, its NATO ally.

Two Israelis and one Iranian citizen were also killed in Saturday's attack on Istanbul's main pedestrian shopping street..

Turkish authorities re-opened Istanbul's main pedestrian shopping street, hours after the bombing happened there.

Damage could be seen to several shops next to the site of the explosion. Some windows were also broken.

The explosion went off outside a local government office near cafes, restaurants and foreign consulate buildings.

Turkey's health minister said 36 people were wounded in the attack, including 12 foreign nationals.

The five dead included the bomber.

Names of the American victims were not immediately released.

Israel said two of the dead were Israelis.

It was the 6th suicide bombing in turkey in the past year.

Families waited outside an emergency room for news of their loved ones.
