HOUSTON – A former civilian jailer with the Houston Police Department, pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor assault.
Lasswon Shannon was sentenced to a year probation and fined $300, and must spend five days in the Harris County Jail as a condition of his plea,
Officials said on June 10, Shannon hit a mentally ill inmate several times while the inmate was in a padded cell at the Houston Police Department’s Central Jail.
The Houston Police Department and the Civil Rights Division of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office investigated surveillance video showing the assault to be inconsistent with Shannon’s description of the event.
“This case illustrates the importance of having a video when complaints are made against law enforcement officials. We could not have proven this particular case without the video to disprove the justification given by the jailer,” Chief of the District Attorney’s Office Civil Rights Division Julian Ramirez said in a press release.
